It's been a long time in the making, but RTKL and KlingStubbins are getting closer to the completion of the new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) campus in White Oak, Maryland. They were selected in 1996, in conjunction with Kling to design the campus set to accommodate approximately 9,000 employees, an 80 percent increase.

In the past 12 years, many buildings have already been completed, including the Center for Drugs Evaluation and Research (CDER), a laboratory for Life Science, another for Engineering Physics, and a shared-use building which houses a cafeteria, meeting rooms and a library. Still under construction are the offices of the Center of Devices and Radiological Evaluation (CDRH), as well as the offices for the Office of Commissioner and Office of Regulatory Affairs.

The project was selected by the General Services Administration "Design Excellence" program to design a new consolidated headquarters. The Design Excellence program was created by the GSA in order to receive a higher quality of proposals from submitting companies

The design team created a master plan which grouped buildings around a series of courtyards and a great central lawn creating a pedestrian environment in the spirit of the great universities and campuses of the world.

The campus is set for completion in 2012.
