Terminal D/E features new retail and restaurant concession areas and additional queuing space for passengers (designed in collaboration with Odell Associates and SPG3); two new public artwork installations and concession areas on the public concourse; dimensional art installations made from etched glass, stone, metal, and organic materials by Elizabeth Billings and Andrea Wasserman along the escalator; white glass tile walls; and white and grey terrazzo floor finishes. Additional amenities for passengers include 23 new ticket counter positions and public circulation areas.
"What makes this project so special for Philadelphia and
such a success is the user-friendly, welcoming and comforting
environment we created for the traveling public,” says principal in
charge of design Karen Daroff, IIDA. “In the past, the Airport has
had a relatively subdued monochromatic palette, and in this
project, we celebrate color through artwork and materials, with
vibrant yellow wall color, bright blue terrazzo and seating in the
Rotunda café…[Passengers] arrive in a welcoming, retail mall area
complete with upscale shops and food and beverage venues."The new design allows for enhanced security via a centralized and expanded checkpoints, with 14 screening lanes and automated baggage screening systems (set to open in 2011), while new Division of Aviation offices and space for an aviation lounge are located on the third floor.
“Already the subject of positive critical acclaim, the Terminal D/E Expansion projects a modern, sleek image to both arriving and departing passengers,” says Philadelphia International Airport CEO Mark Gale, in a statement. “We’re very pleased with the function and comfort of the terminal expansion, and also with our initial feedback from passengers and airport tenants. The D/E expansion, designed by DDI, a firm we've worked with successfully for many years, has helped us achieve our vision for the airport, and will allow us to accommodate increased visitor traffic while providing a memorable, world-class travel experience.”
