A select group of firms will be chosen by an SFMOMA appointed committee of museum and community leaders, on which director of research and planning at California College of the Arts David Meckel, FAIA, will serve as an advisory resource. Top focuses for firm selection include a proven ability to understand and meet the needs of an art museum as a civic resource and a commitment to environmentally sustainable development.
The committee will evaluate all submissions and make their recommendation to the Board of Trustees, who will make the final project decision in fall 2010.
"Throughout its 75-year history, SFMOMA has always been committed to great architecture and design. SFMOMA is looking forward to adding new facilities that will be distinguished in their design, and above all, accessible and inspiring for visitors. While exceptional design is a key criteria, it is important to note that SFMOMA already has a landmark building that serves as a beacon for the museum's role and service to the community. This expansion is more about expanding and enhancing the visitor experience than it is about "destination architecture," says Neal Benezra, director of SFMOMA.
SFMOMA has been collaborating with Bain & Company, a management consulting firm, since October to plan out the necessary requirements and costs associated with the expansion. SFMOMA’s last expansion took place in 1995 when it changed locations and moved from the San Francisco War Memorial Building to its current location on Third Street.
"Expanding SFMOMA and doubling its endowment will accommodate the tremendous growth of the museum's audiences, educational programs, and collections since 1995, and allow us to better serve more visitors in the 21st century. Strengthening the museum will also elevate San Francisco's cultural vitality, creative economy, and global reputation as an arts destination," says Benezra.
