Eighty one awards were distributed in The Best of NeoCon® 2010 competition of contract furnishing products during NeoCon® at The Merchandise Mart. Seven Innovation Awards, three Editors’ Choice Awards, and a Best of Competition Award also were selected among the 39 categories—ranging from Architectural Products to Workplace Technologies.
More than 200 guests attended the Best of NeoCon® Awards Breakfast this morning (June 14) at the Renaissance Hotel, Chicago, where Contract magazine announced the winners of its 21st annual Best of NeoCon® Competition, recognizing innovative, new products introduced to the U.S. market since the close of NeoCon® the previous year.
ON® by Wilkhahn in the Seating: Ergonomic/Task category (shown below right) captured the coveted Best of Competition, as well as the Gold Award in that category and a Silver Award in Seating: Conference. ON is designed to address the fact that the majority of back pain results from excessive, daily inactivity. With functionality that mimics that of an exercise ball, the chair provides the user with a center of gravity for fluid and natural 3-D movement. It also is easy to disassemble and comes at a competitive price point.
Judges comments include: “ON by Wilkhahn is a great chair on every level—it looks good without screaming about ergonomics;” and “It’s a beautiful chair with innovative functionality that is also very comfortable and well-priced.”
Additionally, Innovation Awards, which recognize the products that the judges considered to be category “game-changers,” were given to:
- Milliken Constantine for The Notan Collection
- Steelcase for node
- Knoll Inc. for Antenna Workspaces
- ITOKI Design Corporation for CH Bench
- Okamura Corporation for Leopard Mid-Back
- Coalesse for SW_1
- MechoShade Systems for SunDialer
Editors' Choice Awards were presented to:
- Highmark for InTouch
- Jofco for DR
- KI for Soltíce II Recliner

The total of 326 entrants were evaluated during the three days preceding NeoCon® 2010 by a jury of 45 corporate, government, and institutional facilities management executives, interior designers, and architects, who are responsible for selecting and buying furniture and furnishings for their specific organizations or clients. Eight jury teams visited Merchandise Mart showrooms and temporary market suites to judge each product in person, based on the following criteria: functionality, flexibility, quality/durability, aesthetics/style, innovation, environmental sustainability, and pricing. Manufacturers or product designers had the opportunity to explain and discuss details of each entered product and to answer juror's questions.
Winning products are on exhibition at NeoCon® 2010 at The Merchandise Mart, Chicago, June 14-16. Winners will also be featured in Contract’s July/August 2010 issue.
New this year to Best of NeoCon® is the People’s Choice Award. Provided via a collaboration between Contract magazine and tech start-up Designer Pages, the social media-driven, “this or that” voting tool creates a fun and engaging way for NeoCon® attendees, as well as the rest of the A&D community, to cast their own online vote for the best new NeoCon® product at my.neocon.com/best-of-neocon
The Best of NeoCon® Competition is sponsored by Contract magazine, Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., McMorrowReport.com, the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), and the International Facility Management Association (IFMA).
