Healthcare Environment Awards 2013
Ambulatory Care Honorable Mention
Client: Bayhealth Medical Center
Where: Dover, Delaware
An integral part of the masterplan for the Bayhealth Medical Center, the Kent Campus Expansion, Phase 2 Pavilion by EwingCole contains an emergency department and oncology center, supported by a helipad, conference center, central sterile department, compounding pharmacy, security department, loading dock, central plant, and 360-space parking garage. The pavilion also provides a platform for the addition of a 10-story patient care tower in the future.
The emergency department was designed to accommodate 60,000 visits per year. It includes 43 treatment spaces that can serve a variety of uses, including exam rooms, trauma, fast track, decontamination, and psychiatric care. The center offers radiation oncology on the first floor, along with exam rooms and clinical and administrative support. On the second floor, medical oncology includes 24 chemotherapy treatment spaces, exam rooms, pharmacy, laboratory, and administrative and physician offices.
Connecting the pavilion to the existing hospital, a new welcome center and lobby are lit by skylights. Within the double-height space, a wave-like stair serves as a focal point, and a wood-clad canopy and wall surfaces add warmth. While most surfaces in the lobby and throughout the pavilion are white, there a few colorful exceptions. One juror found the interiors “uplifting,” and another commented that it is “refreshing in terms of a new way of thinking about healthcare interiors.”
