Architecture Critic Inga Saffron Wins Pulitzer Prize

-By Holly O'Dell

Philadelphia Inquirer architecture critic Inga Saffron has won a Pulitzer Prize “for her criticism of architecture that blends expertise, civic passion, and sheer readability into arguments that consistently stimulate and surprise.”

A three-time finalist of journalism’s most prestigious award, Saffron writes the popular column “Changing Skyline,” focusing on the buildings and public spaces that Philadelphia residents encounter every day. This year, she launched Built, a webpage where she packages Inquirer stories on architecture, development, and transportation.

Saffron’s submitted works to Pulitzer judges cover topics such as lackluster design at a new chain hotel and a surprisingly distinct home for a Cheesecake Factory restaurant. Inquirer editor William K. Marimow said that Saffron exemplifies “the best there is in journalism: great reporting, great writing, incisive criticism.”
