Philadelphia studio Austin + Mergold has completed its winning entry for Folly, a competition co-sponsored by The Architectural League and Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York. The program invites emerging architects and designers to propose contemporary interpretations of the architectural folly.
SuralArk, selected from 170 entries, is “an American vernacular interpretation” of the original Noah’s Ark. Designers Jason Timberlake Austin and Aleksandr Mergold conceived their sculpture as an unfinished or decomposing boat hull rising from the ground to provide a canopy and a place for reflection. Made of 2x6 wood joists and vinyl siding, the piece derives its name from the blurred lines between suburban and rural.
SuralArk is on display at Socrates Sculpture Park until August 3.
