Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS) has recently completed an installation of 8,400 solar panels across an area the size of six soccer fields for the production of green energy. A joint project between DUS and a subsidiary of the city’s public services, Grünwerke GmbH, the system will generate two megawatts of sustainable energy per year, equivalent to the power used by 600 four-person households in the city.
In addition to notable cost and energy savings, the plant also represents a shift in prioritizing management between public and private enterprises.
“A PV plant of this magnitude within the safety parameters of one of the country’s largest passenger airports reflects a new way of thinking about renewable energies,” says Dirk Elbers, DUS’s major.
With 70 airlines serving 180 destinations worldwide, DUS’s innovative energy model will be on display for arrivals to the city’s surrounding 500,000 offices that include foreign corporations such as Fujifilm Europe, Nokia Siemens, Ericsson, and Toshiba.
