Architects Kevin Roche and Eugene Kohn are collaborating to design 55 Hudson Yards. The 51-story office tower is the newest addition to the 28-acre Hudson Yards development in New York City. Kohn's firm, Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), will serve as executive architect.
The architects derived their inspiration from several sources, including the cast iron façade of SoHo’s commercial buildings, as well as early modernism. Clad in matte metal, the exterior features stepped articulation of window frames whose texture and depth are enhanced by sun and shadow.
The building’s surrounding green spaces also play an influential role in the design. An outdoor terrace on the 10th floor overlooks New York’s new Hudson Park. Floor-to-ceiling glass throughout the building, enhanced by column-free corners, welcomes abundant natural light and affords views of the Midtown skyline and Hudson River. Tenants also have the option to create private double-height terraces to enjoy the vistas.
Construction will begin in January 2015 with occupancy ready by the end of 2017.
