Fentress Architects to Produce Initial Plans for Miami Beach Convention Center Overhaul

21 April, 2014

-By Holly O'Dell

Miami Beach city commissioners have selected Fentress Architects as the design criteria professional for the city’s $500 million convention center renovation. The Denver firm bested seven other practices competing for the $11 million contract. In its role, Fentress will create partial plans for the project, according to the Miami Herald. These will serve as the basis of another bid for a design-build firm, who will implement the initial designs and complete the project.

The city is revisiting the convention center makeover after a newly elected commission scrapped plans in January for a $1 billion redevelopment led by OMA’s New York office. That version of the project would have included an 800-room hotel and two ballrooms set atop the facility, as well as a large public park.

Commissioners plan to fast-track the current project, with a design-build firm selected in a year and targeted completion by December 2017, in time for Art Basel.
