NYC Parks and the Battery Conservancy have named five finalists of a design competition to create a mobile outdoor chair for the Battery, one of Manhattan’s oldest parks. The winning design, to be announced in June 2014, will be manufactured for use on Battery Green, a three-acre oval lawn currently under construction. The chair’s designer will receive a $10,000 prize.
Launched in July 2012, the Battery Conservancy Americas Design Competition challenged students and professionals from North, Central, and South America to rethink public outdoor seating. The conservancy will fund full-scale prototypes of the finalists’ designs, which will be available for public viewing and testing from April through June 2014 at the Battery’s Castle Clinton National Monument.
The finalists are:
Andrew Jones Design: Andrew Jones, Toronto
Maria Camarena Design: Maria Camarena Bernard, Zapopan, Mexico
Independent Design Group: Simon Kristak & Aidan Jamison, Brooklyn
Jason Bird, Redwood City, California
Pitanga: Davi Deusdara, Érica Martins, Tais Costa, and Rafael Studart Alencar Falcão, Brazil
