Foster + Partners brings the desert to Italy in its recently revealed renderings of the United Arab Emirates pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo. Two undulating 39-ft.-high-walls define the structure, whose paths of self-shaded pedestrian streets and courtyards evoke the atmosphere of UAE’s ancient cities. The walls, which continue throughout the elongated site in a series of parallel waves, suggest the ridges and textures of the emirate’s and dunes.
A ramp travels upwards from the canyon-like entrance toward the auditorium, contained within a drum at the center of the site. Food and beverage options include a ground-level café, formal restaurant, and hospitality rooftop terrace. Foster + Partners is targeting LEED Platinum with sustainable features such as rainwater capture and photovoltaic cells. After its run at Expo, the structure will be disassembled and reconstructed in the UAE.
