Herzog & de Meuron Selected to Design Vancouver Art Gallery’s New Home

The Vancouver Art Gallery has selected Herzog & de Meuron to design its new building. The 300,000-square-foot downtown facility will more than double the footprint of the current gallery with expanded indoor and outdoor exhibit areas, public gathering spaces, an auditorium, and educational facilities.

The project’s architect selection committee unanimously recommended Herzog & De Meuron over four other finalists: Diller Scofidio + Renfro, KPMB Architects, SANAA, and Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects.

“Throughout the selection process, Herzog & de Meuron demonstrated a deep commitment to and respect for the rich history and unique spirit of the gallery, our community, and our surrounding natural and urban environment,” gallery director Kathleen Bartels said in a statement. “Our new purpose-built home will embrace the rich diversity of our community and serve as a nexus for cross-cultural dialogue and exchange.”

The gallery plans to unveil conceptual designs for the new building in early 2015.
