An upcoming expansion and renovation to the CaliforniaAfrican American Museum (CAMM) in Los Angeles will be directed by lead design architects Huff + Gooden, as well as HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA) as executive architects. As lead design architect, Huff + Gooden is in charge of the architectural design and managing the design process through all phases of the project, while HGA will handle museum planning, construction documents and construction administration.
Located in Exposition Park, the $67.3 million project incorporates 77,000 square feet of new construction, as well as a renovation of 26,000 existing square feet. One of the project’s highlights is the “World Wall,” an exterior, backlit translucent glass scrim wall of digital text that wraps around the building, serving as a conductor of African American and human experiences between the structure, its site and the city.
Plans also accommodate the possibility of future changes for educational programming space; museum store; café; a black box lecture and theater space, and new art and history gallery space. The design phase of the project has been completed and is contingent upon unverified funding to finish future phases.
