IIDA NY Announces 2014 Student Design Award Winners

16 April, 2014

-By Holly O'Dell

The International Interior Design Association’s New York Chapter (IIDA NY) has named winners of the 2014 Student Design Awards. The program honors students whose original interior design projects demonstrate consistent, creative principles.

Participants submitted design portfolios, which included up to two individual projects and their design philosophy. Five of the 87 entries received first-place awards of $3,000 and an IIDA Student Membership. Another five students received honorable mentions.

The winners are:

Amanda Bacha, School of Visual Arts

Project: AMP, Asbury Music Park
Jury comment: “The ceiling design is outstanding and provides a dramatic backdrop for the performers and the audience.”

Pedro Barillas, New School of Design

Project: FreeMan Hotel
Jury comment: “There is plenty of three-dimensional eye-candy, but it isn’t trendy or cliché — it is strong architecture.”

Yuanyuan Ma, New York School of Interior Design

Project: WeWood flagship store
Jury comment: “Constant attention to the function of space while truly maintaining the core concept shows good design discipline.”

Kuan Chung Tao, Fashion Institute of Technology

Project: Ophthalmology Office
Jury comment: “There is a consistency and thoughtfulness to the approach that is both successful in whimsy and practicality.”

Yawen Wang, School of Visual Arts
Project: Moments in the Hudson
Jury comment: “This design is wonderful in how it takes an everyday New York sight (the Hudson River) and turns it into an adventure of discovery.”
