A new design for Melbourne, Australia’s Western Precinct was recently unveiled, which government officials are lauding as the world’s first Grand Slam tennis venue to feature three feature courts with operable roofs. As one of the three main areas of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct, the plan calls for a redevelopment of Margaret Court Arena that will add an operable roof to the structure and increase capacity from 1,500 to 7,500, in a pleated roof design that will complement its adjacent surroundings. A new indoor concourse with improved visitor facilities has also been drafted.
“The roof will provide greater shade and rain protection for the public, while the new foyer spaces are light, airy, and inviting,” says Dr. Danis Napthine, minister for major projects. “This fantastic new design is focused on people and creating an active and welcoming space.”
New entryways and connections shared with Rod Laver Arena will improve mobility during major events like the Australian Open, which generate vital economic contributions to the province of Victoria. The Australian Open alone generates approximately 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs and $164 million in income. “The whole Melbourne Park redevelopment is about boosting Melbourne’s capacity for sporting and entertainment events, which will help secure major events such as the Australian Open for many years to come,” Dr. Napthine explains.
The Victorian Coalition Government will invest $363 million the Melbourne Park’s redevelopment that is expected to reach completion in 2015.
