Architect and designer Michael Graves will be featured in an exhibition at the Virginia Center for Architecture in Richmond, Virginia, on view from January 17– March 31. Towers & Teakettles: Michael Graves Architecture & Design will highlight work from his two firms, Michael Graves & Associates and Michael Graves Design Group, ranging from architecture to product design to graphics.
The exhibition will highlight iconic objects such as his Whistling Bird Teakettle designed for Alessi and a life-sized rendering of the Prime TC Transport Chair for Stryker Medical. Featured projects will include the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, Virginia, the U.S. Courthouse in Washington, D.C., and Resorts World Sentosa, a recently completed resort in Singapore designed from top to bottom by Graves and his team.
His prototypes for the Wounded Warrior Home in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, a project that improves the quality of life for wounded soldiers returning to active duty with the availability of universally accessible homes on base, will also be on view. The hope is for the homes to serve as a model for other military bases. “As a paraplegic myself, I was inspired to rethink how the design of comfortable, well-functioning living spaces could better meet the unique needs of our wounded military,” Graves says.
The exhibition will open on January 17 with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and include remarks from Karen Nichols, FAIA, principal with Michael Graves & Associates.
