The New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) has developed a one-year program for a Master of Professional Studies in Healthcare Interior Design that will launch in the fall of 2012. The post-professional program—the first degree-granting one in the country—will focus on creating interior spaces for a variety of healthcare facilities, from large hospitals and critical care units to specialty health centers and dementia care facilities.
“As the healthcare industry and the government grapple with the complexities and debates that shape society, this program will prepare students to deal with this issue and be responsive to the growing healthcare field,” says Dr. Ellen Fisher, vice president of academic affairs and dean of NYSID. The curriculum is expected to equip graduates with knowledge that can be applied in professions such as healthcare specialist designers, architecture and design researchers, healthcare facility planners, and various administrative and design management positions within the healthcare industry.
The 30-credit program was conceived by Dr. Fisher, Tama Duffy Day, FASID, FIIDA, LEED AP, design principal and interior design healthcare practice leader at Perkins+Will, and Michael Pukszta, AIA, design principal at Cannon Design and chairman of Cannon Design’s Steering committee for the National Healthcare Practice.
The MPS in Healthcare Interior Design is the fourth graduate program NYSID has launched in the past three years. To learn more, visit
