New York City officials have announced plans for NYCxDESIGN, a five-borough event that will showcase and promote the city's design industries—from architectural and product to fashion and graphic design. Running May 10 to 21, the event aims to attract more designers and manufacturers to the city, generate sales and export leads for local designers, and increase design-based tourism.
“NYCxDESIGN will help demonstrate that New York City is the design capital of the world,” says Christine Quinn, speaker of the city council, which is producing the event. “All five boroughs are home to a staggering amount of design talent in a wide range of disciplines, and this inaugural city-wide event will help harness this potential and turn it into a tool for economic growth.”
This platform for cultural and commercial opportunities will include tours, talks, exhibitions, installations, trade shows, and open studios, to highlight all disciplines—architectural, graphic, fashion, product, interior, and landscape design—and their processes.
The event is bookended by the Frieze Art Fair and International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). NYCxDESIGN also will serve as the catalyst for year-round design happenings throughout the city.
