The Nicole Bridger Flagship store in Vancouver is turning over a “new leaf.” The recently opened eco-friendly clothing shop features a green design, created by local design firm New Leaf Interior Design, that fashion designer Nicole Bridger claims to be the most sustainable retail store in the city.
The 600-sq.-ft. store features a contemporary aesthetic with clean lines and back-lit, douglas fir display shelves, which were crafted from old church support beams, that create the illusion of a larger space. “From the moment you arrive until the time your leave with your purchase, the space will make you feel energized, rejuvenated, and inspired,” says Kate Cannata, lead designer on the project, in a statement.
To reduce construction waste, the design team opted to smooth and cover the space’s existing imperfect gypsum board walls with lime plaster. “The lime plaster cuts carbon footprint in a variety of ways. The longevity makes it an excellent green building choice because it will not need to be replaced or regularly maintained like other building methods. Lime plaster can be recycled and reused and it also is resistant to mold and fungus, increasing the quality of the air when used indoors,” Cannata says.
Radiant floor heating also was employed and sustainable materials include Paperstone for signage, made from recycled paper composite; the 3form Varia Eco-Resin chandelier from Vancouver-based designers Propellor (40 percent postconsumer recycled material); and Farrow & Ball Paints, which contain no VOCs and all-natural pigments.
