The Minneapolis City Council has approved Architectural Alliance and Sink Combs Dethlefs to lead the $97 million renovation of Target Center in Minneapolis. Upgrades to the 23-year-old venue — which hosts 200 events per year and is home to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx basketball teams — will include a new entrance, additional gathering spaces, and improved flow.
The design team proposes to re-skin the building with paint and copper or metallic finishes, complemented with windows and balconies that “simultaneously animate the experience for patrons inside the building and enlivens this active entertainment district from the outside,” according to the design statement.
Plans also call for lifting the new exterior enclosure to lighten the building’s street presence and create a feeling of safety for pedestrians. Construction is expected to start in spring 2015.
