Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) has been tapped to design the City Center at Bishop Ranch, a 585-acre mixed-use business community in San Ramon, California. The first phase of the project is a 350,000-square-foot retail component featuring a movie theater and myriad dining options. Future phases call for a 169-room hotel, four new office buildings totaling 800,000 square feet, and 479 residential units.
RPBW, in collaboration with San Francisco firm BCV Architects, is conceiving the project around a generous piazza surrounded by pavilions of varying sizes. “The City Center is a porous, permeable urban architectural composition,” Antonio Belvedere, partner at RPBW, said in a statement. “Inside is open and oriented to the piazza, and with the same force and conviction, the outside is open to its surrounds.”
Designed as a social hub, the piazza also will have an open-air theater for concerts and other events. “A good presence of restaurants, café terraces, and shopping opportunities, together with culture, music, and nature, will create a true authentic vitalized City Center for San Ramon,” Belvedere added.
