Six Firms Shortlisted for London's Crystal Palace

05 March, 2014

-By Holly O'Dell

Six architectural firms have been selected to submit designs for the rebuild of Crystal Palace in London. The building, located atop the 180-acre Crystal Palace Park, will house cultural, exhibition, and office space.

The shortlisted practices are:

David Chipperfield Architects
Grimshaw
Haworth Tompkins Architects
Marks Barfield Architects
Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners
Zaha Hadid Architects with Anish Kapoor

Joseph Paxton designed the original Crystal Palace in 1851 for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. Three years later, it was expanded and relocated to South London; a fire destroyed the building in 1936. It was the world’s largest glass structure at the time.

Developer ZhongRong Group announced its plans to revive the Victorian landmark in October 2013. The surrounding park—known for its landscaped terraces, full-scale models of dinosaurs, and a maze—also will undergo a restoration. The project’s selection panel will appoint an architect sometime this summer.
