Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, has selected Studio Gang Architects to convert a 100-year-old power plant into an activity and recreation center. The college has a three-year window to raise $30 million to transform the building, currently owned by Alliant Energy.
Studio Gang will lead the building’s preparation efforts, including determining which interior components could be removed and recycled and which could remain at the site. The studio’s plans also will address design and interaction with the surrounding area.
“Together we can transform this historic structure into a new hub for wellness, green power, and great architecture,” Studio Gang principal Jeanne Gang said in a statement. “By reflecting Beloit’s core values in the design, values shared by our team, we will create a model that will bring many benefits to the college, city, and region. This is a project that has the potential to inspire other communities around the globe.”
