Tarkett Hosts Breakfast with Dr. Michael Braungart at NeoCon

11 June, 2014

-By Murrye Bernard

Dr. Michael Braungart spoke at a breakfast Tuesday morning during NeoCon hosted by Tarkett. Dr. Braungart studied chemistry and process engineering and is the founder and CEO of Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA), an environmental research and consulting institute headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. He is also the co-founder, along with William McDonough, of the Cradle to Cradle framework.

Following an introduction by Jeff Fenwick, President and COO of Tarkett North America, Dr. Braungart discussed his philosophy behind Cradle to Cradle and its impacts on material innovation, as well as his views on industry sustainability initiatives. Dr. Braungart pointed out that though mankind strives to achieve carbon neutrality, it is not the best goal, as it ultimately means that mankind ceases to exist. He posed the question: “Have you ever seen a tree that is carbon neutral?” Trees benefit the environment, and Dr. Braungart believes mankind can do the same.

Dr. Braungart and the EPEA are collaborating with Tarkett to create a tool to establish full transparency related to material content of building products. The tool will address ingredient disclosure, possible health and environmental impacts, and post-use considerations. The company aims to be the first in the flooring industry to establish third party verification for their approach.

In line with Tarkett’s sustainability initiatives, Dr. Braungart is a proponent of beginning the manufacturing process with materials that are not harmful to people and living things, rather than attempting to recycle materials that have been proven harmful. “Telling someone what is not in something doesn’t help,” he said. “We need full transparency.”

Tarkett will release details on the tool in the weeks following NeoCon.
