The 2013 AIA COTE Top Ten Green Projects

23 April, 2013

-By Erinn Waldo

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE) has released its annual list of the Top Ten Green Projects. Recognizing eco-friendly structures, the program selects winners based on design and innovation, integration with the community, and land use. The project's effect on site ecology, bioclimatic design, energy and water use, approach to light, air, materials and construction, long-life considerations, and feedback loops are also considered.

Winning designers include Kieran Timberlake, Continuum Architects + Planners, ZGF Architects, EHDD, Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects, the College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, Lake Flato Architects, KMD Architects with Stevens and Associates, Ross Barney Architects and architect of record SIA Architects, and Brooks + Scarpa. Aidlin Darling Design’s Mararozzi/Pelsinger Building also won the inaugural COTE Top Ten Plus Award, which recognizes a past COTE Top Ten Green Project for its ongoing performance.

The 2012 jury included Fiona Cousins of Arup in New York; Lance Hosey, AIA, of RTKL in Washington, D.C.; Keelan Kaiser, AIA, of Judson University in Elgin, Ill.; Sheila Kennedy, AIA, of Kennedy & Violich Architecture in Roxbury, Mass.; Rod Kruse, FAIA, of BNIM Architects in Des Moines, Iowa; and Gail Vittori of the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems in Austin, Texas.
