USDA Launches Initiative to Promote Building with Wood

The USDA has announced a new program to train architects, engineers, and builders on the benefits of using wood building products in construction while supporting domestic production. The department is partnering with WoodWorks, an organization that provides technical support, education, and resources related to the design of modern wood buildings.

“Building stronger markets for innovative new wood products supports sustainable forestry, helps buffer reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and puts rural America at the forefront of an emerging industry,” according to a statement released by the USDA.

Later this year, the department will invest up to $1 million in a competition to promote the design and construction of high-rise wood buildings. The Binational Softwood Lumber Council has committed an additional $1 million for the competition, which gives priority to applicants who source materials from rural manufacturers and domestic sustainably managed forests.
