Green Building Initiative Launches New Certification Program for Commercial Interiors
The Green Building Initiative (GBI) has introduced a new certification program geared toward commercial and institutional interiors. The program, known as Green Globes for Sustainable Interiors, allows tenants to design or improve their existing interior space to the new standards without needing to certify an entire building.
Green Globes for Sustainable Interiors uses a third-party assessor who reviews building characteristics and documentation. The program, which has no prerequisites, requires that interior designers and tenant project teams address only the sustainability criteria within their domain of influence.
"The Green Globes for Sustainable Interiors program will be especially attractive to tenants who want to improve their workspace sustainability in situations where a landlord does not plan to address changes in other tenant or common spaces," GBI president Jerry Yudelson said in a statement.
The program includes six environmental assessment areas: project management, energy, water, materials and resources, emissions and other impacts, and indoor environment. Green Globes also emphasizes the key performance indicators (KPIs) of energy, materials, and indoor environment, but it does not deal with site characteristics.
Interior designers earn points for using multipurpose furniture, modular furniture, casework, and other interior fit-out components that can be easily reconfigured. The reuse of existing interior fit-outs earns additional points.
