Santiago Calatrava Designs Florida Polytechnic University

Florida Polytechnic University is set to open on August 16th. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, the campus takes up 170 acres and marks Florida's 12th and newest member of the State University System.



The 200,000-square-foot Innovation, Science, and Technology Building, also known as the Main Building, is located on the north side of the campus' central lake and boasts an exterior made of lightweight aluminum, concrete, aluminum cladding, and glass. An ornate latticed skin extends out, shading the interiors and creating comfortable outdoor seating areas. This pergola reduces the solar load on the building by 30 percent. It's operable roof, made of two sets of aluminum louvers, uses the power of hydraulic pistons to move with the sun and can be fitted with solar panels.



Inside, the building is made of concrete flooring and columns, glass, plaster, and steel and will house classrooms, offices, meeting spaces, and an amphitheater for larger events. The second floor contains offices and meeting rooms arranged around the Commons, a large meeting space under a vaulted skylight.



Calatrava took advantage of the topography of the area and his designs look onto the campus lake. The campus is connected by a series of pedestrian causeways and walkways, as well as a road that goes through trees and other greenery.



"I am honored to have been involved in this project dedicated to the study of science, technology, engineering and math—a set of subjects so crucial to our society and our economy," said Calatrava. "I am proud of what we have all achieved and I hope the young people that study here will be inspired to be creative and to meet their potential."
