Paul Makovsky Named Editor in Chief of Contract Magazine

Paul Makovsky was today named editor in chief of Contract magazine, the leading publication for commercial interior design and architecture for nearly 60 years. In his new role, Makovsky will oversee all content development and editorial production for Contract’s print and digital platforms, as well as its growing events business, including the annual Contract Interiors Awards in New York, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2019, and Contract Design Forum taking place October 2018—a two-day summit bringing together the industry’s leaders to discuss and debate the current state of the industry. Makovsky will also play a crucial role in the development of contract programming and strategy for ICFF—North America’s preeminent global design fair, produced and owned by Contract’s parent company, Emerald Expositions.

Makovsky arrives at Contract having spent the last 18 years at Metropolis magazine, where he had several senior editorial roles, including editorial and brand director. There he worked on a complete redesign of the magazine in 2014, and most recently was vice president of design, overseeing the launch of a new supplement on multi-housing, and most recently, the publication of the sixth edition of the official guide to NYCxDESIGN.

Prior to Metropolis, he spent about two years as the managing editor of the award-winning 2wice magazine. He began his career in the early 1990s as the director of research at the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum, for the exhibition, “Mixing Messages: Graphic Design in Contemporary Culture.” He is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal and the University of Toronto.

“Paul joins Contract at an exciting time where the ability to connect and complement the print magazine and live events with new media have all been realized,” says Karen Donaghy, Contract publisher. “He brings a unique perspective and proven ability to support industry partnerships with great passion and intellect for all scales of architecture and design.”

“Paul is a friend, advisor, and long supporter of ICFF and we are excited to work with him as the fair develops new initiatives in the contract marketplace,” says Kevin O’Keefe, ICFF event director. “This is especially important now that more than 40 percent of the ICFF audience is engaged in commercial design.”

“My curiosity and love for architecture, design and innovation is what drives me,” Makovsky says. “I look forward to working with the amazing team at Contract and also collaborating with the company’s sister brands to create great content and experiences about the breakthrough interiors, products, and ideas coming from the inspiring community of architects, designers, and manufacturers who all together meaningfully make the world a better place through design.”

Makovsky will report to Donaghy and will be based at the company’s New York offices.
