Büro Ole Scheeren has completed DUO, a pair of twin towers slated for development in the historic Kampong Glam district of Singapore. Conceived to symbolize the relationship between Malaysia and Singapore, the project will serve in the revitalization efforts of the area.

“DUO is about a sense of urban responsibility,” said Ole Scheeren, Principal of Büro Ole Scheeren. “It shows how architecture can become a tool of reconciliation within an otherwise disparate and fragmented urban context. The project repairs a broken piece of the city and celebrates public life as the central quality of a socially responsible urban environment.”

The taller of the two volumes—ascending more than 600 feet—accommodates 660 apartments spread across 50 floors. At more than 550 feet, the second tower houses 39 floors of offices and guestrooms for a new Andaz hotel. Both towers are oriented to form a series of circular, urban spaces that include cafés and restaurants. The curved facades also ripple with texture, clad with a honeycomb shading system. Pathways and gardens span the ground below the towers, while private terraces and public observation decks are outfitted on the rooftops as well as cantilevered elements.
