Foster + Partners and the City of Stockholm have revealed plans for Mälarterrassen, the final building included in the redevelopment of the Slussen interchange within the city’s old town, Gamla Stan. The project, which will be collaboratively designed with Berg Arkitektkontor, is slated for completion in 2025.

Spanning three stories, Mälarterrassen will be constructed between the city’s quay and Södermalmstorg square. The low-lying, mixed-use structure will accommodate a variety of public facilities including market stalls, restaurants, cafés, and galleries. Equipped with 24-hour elevators, Mälarterrassen will serve as a point of connection between Gamla Stan and the elevated landscape of Södermalmstorg as well. Public terraces will frame expansive views, while the structure’s glazed surfaces will allow northern light to illuminate internal spaces. Mälarterrassen is also designed to adapt to summer and winter climates.
