The NHL’s New York Islanders will part ways with the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and establish a new home in Belmont Park. Located in Nassau County, Long Island, the forthcoming arena is conceived to accommodate 18,000 seats and include an adjacent mixed-use development that spans 435,000 square feet. The project, which is slated for completion by 2020, beat out a bid for development on the site by the New York City Football Club as well.

Populous will spearhead the design for the arena, working in collaboration with Sterling Project Development. The development will be connected to the Long Island Railroad’s Belmont Park station, which will become a fully active stop once the arena is completed. Expected to host an estimated 150 annual events, the arena will be equipped with elements to ensure a zealous transformation into a concert hall. It is not yet confirmed whether or not Populous will lead the design for the mixed-use component of the campus, which will include a luxury hotel, retail, and dining.
