Herman Miller: ColourForm Sofa Group

May 18, 2017

Amsterdam-based design firm Scholten & Baijings, led by husband and wife Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings, created its first furniture line for Herman Miller—the ColourForm Sofa Group. The seating collection is upholstered with new textiles that the pair designed for Maharam, the New York–based textile company with which they have collaborated for several years. It was a natural next step to form a relationship with Herman Miller (the Michigan-based company acquired Maharam in 2013).

To achieve a draped effect over the wood frames, which are available in several matte finishes, Scholten & Baijings developed two new fabrics for Maharam: Tracery and Pare. The textiles appear monochromatic, but each employs subtle geometrical textures that create three-dimensional effects.

The ColourForm Sofa Group includes two- and three-seat sofas, which come in one- and two-arm versions or without arms. A chaise lounge is offered in a low-arm tête-à-tête version or with left- or right-side arms. Other pieces include a low-arm club chair, a corner unit, an ottoman, and a bench.

Scholten and Baijings try out their products in their own home. “We want to want the products we design,” Baijings says. “If we don’t want to live with it, why would anyone else want to buy it?” The ColourForm Sofa Group debuted at Salone del Mobile in Milan and will be on display in Herman Miller’s showroom during NeoCon in Chicago in June.
