To design the Genesis HealthCare Cancer Care Center in Zanesville, Ohio, SmithGroupJJR worked with the client to unify two cancer care practices—radiation oncology and medical oncology—into one patient-focused facility within the Genesis HealthCare campus. The new two-story ambulatory care center empowers patients.

The sleek-yet-warm lobby is characterized by cream-colored stone floors and an undulating wooden reception desk with an accent wall. Illuminated by daylight through a double-height glass wall and offset by etched glass and stainless steel, the entry echoes that of an upscale hotel. Here, clusters of gray leather seats are available for patients awaiting their treatment appointments.

The cancer center is divided into zones of care. The most noteworthy is the large, open-plan chemotherapy treatment area on the second floor. With floor-to-ceiling glass that provides views of the adjacent park, the treatment area houses twenty individual pods modeled on first-class air cabins. Curved half-walls, off-white leather recliners, semi-transparent glazing, and soothing green tones play off of the wood floors to create a spalike environment. Each pod offers the patient control of lighting and entertainment, and maintains a level of privacy while still allowing visual connection to caregivers as needed.

In concert with the center’s overall design, this artfully planned treatment space has generated an impressive rise in patient satisfaction scores.
