Working closely with architect-of-record API and fitness experts at In-Shape, a California-based chain of health clubs, Gensler designed an open, approachable new club in Napa, California. Aside from functional workout areas and group exercise rooms, this In-Shape branch contains amenities such as a kids’ zone, spin studio, personal training center, and indoor and outdoor pools. The spacious environment features playful informational graphics and an intuitive layout to offer members a relaxed atmosphere in which to pursue their health goals.

Within the large, box-like volume occupied by In-Shape, the designers choreographed a series of single- and double-height spaces that appear to flow seamlessly together. The club’s double-height lobby features a wood reception desk with a white top and polished concrete floors, while affording views throughout the facility. Boldfaced instructional and inspirational messages adorn the brightly painted blue and green walls in workout areas overlooked by second level exercise zones with stainless-steel wire railings. White geometric pendant lights hang amidst exposed white trusses and insulation, and flooring surfaces vary from wood to carpet to rubber mats depending on a space’s function.

In-Shape’s open, straightforward, and fun design offers members a lively and welcoming environment for all types of workouts, from swimming laps in the white-and-blue-tiled indoor pool to completing the “29-Minute Circuit” in the upper gallery.
